The Old Dairy Painting Bridge Road Watercolour

Catching the Light on Bridge Road

There is a particular kind of patience required when sketching the everyday corners of Lowestoft. The Old Dairy on Bridge Road is a place many of us pass without a second thought, but when you sit with it, the building reveals a quiet character of its own.

In this watercolour, I wanted to capture that brief, transitional moment before the day truly gets busy. The picnic benches sit empty, save for a few stray cups, catches of morning shadow stretching across the tarmac. There is a great pleasure in recording these lived-in spaces—the slightly uneven brickwork, the dark fascia of the shopfront, and the newer white-painted section next door, both holding their ground beneath the overhanging branches.

Working with watercolour and ink on location means accepting a certain lack of control, particularly with the weather and the shifting light. The branches overhead were a challenge; I wanted to suggest their messy, natural clutter without crowding the composition. By using loose, varied washes of ochre and sap green against the pen-work, I hoped to capture the filter of daylight through the leaves, contrasting the soft organic shapes with the hard, geometric lines of the windows and bench.

It is often the most ordinary structures that hold the most memories for a community. This painting is simply an observation of a familiar spot, caught in a quiet, fleeting lull.

I hope it brings to mind your own familiar mornings on Bridge Road.
