Waveney & Oulton Broad Yacht Club Watercolour

Drawing the Waveney & Oulton Broad Yacht Club

There is a particular quiet to Oulton Broad before the day gets underway. Sitting in Nicholas Everitt Park with a sketchbook, the focus naturally falls on the conversation between the built environment and the open water beside it. The yacht club clubhouse presents a solid, functional structure—lots of horizontal lines, timber cladding, and balcony framing—against a vast, shifting background of sky and river.

The goal here was to balance precision with freedom. The dark ink lines provide the structural skeleton, holding the weight of the building and the quay, while soft, loose watercolour washes allow the water and sky to breathe. The challenge with subjects like this is knowing where to stop; the balconies and rigging offer endless detail, but overworking them risks losing the atmosphere of the place.

A single sail out on the water gives a sense of scale to the broad, anchoring the composition and drawing the eye across the open blue. It is a study in contrasts—the heavy, earthy tones of the timber architecture set against the pale, translucent washes of the river. It’s an attempt to record a familiar piece of the Lowestoft landscape not as a static landmark, but as a working waterfront shaped by weather, water, and time.
