The Copper Smokehouse, Oulton Broad
There is a quiet stability to the street corner on Bridge Road. The Copper Smokehouse sits anchored in its place, framed by the surrounding foliage, with its warm brickwork catching the light against the darker tones of the storefront below.
Working with watercolour and ink requires a balance between structure and spontaneity. The pen work provides the immediate geometry—the pitch of the roofline, the dormer windows, and the deliberate lines of the facade. Ink creates an honest, permanent mark; there is little room to hide, which suits the architectural subject well.
Once the linework was settled, I laid down fluid watercolour washes to bring in tone and mood. The warmth of the upper brick contrasts with the cool, dark grey along the ground floor, while soft washes of ochre and yellow inside the windows suggest the light within. The surrounding trees and cast shadows on the pavement are kept loose, allowing the building itself to remain the clear focal point of the composition.
It is an exercise in capturing a familiar local scene through simple line and honest colour.
