Capturing the Surge at the Headland

The movement of coastal waters presents a distinct technical challenge: how to fix a shifting, restless subject onto a static surface without freezing the life out of it. In this recent painting, the focus shifts away from a traditional, placid seascape and moves directly into the energy of the oncoming tide.

Surge at the Headland painting

The composition is built on a deliberate contrast between the weight of the land and the volatility of the sea. To the left, the green headland is rendered with broad, structural strokes, anchoring the scene in place. In the foreground, however, the brushwork changes entirely. Thick, impasto marks recreate the churn of the white water, using a palette of deep blues, teals, and stark whites applied with speed to mimic the chaotic motion of a breaking wave.

Above the water, the sky introduces an unexpected shift in tone. Rather than a standard coastal blue or grey, a wash of lavender and pale violet opens up the atmosphere. It catches the light in a way that suggests a specific, fleeting time of day—perhaps just as weather is rolling in or moving off the coast. In the distance, two small sails are visible against the horizon, providing a necessary sense of scale against the sheer force of the elements.

This piece is less about capturing a postcard view and more about documenting the tactile experience of being near the water’s edge, where the air is thick with salt and the landscape is in constant motion.

This original painting, along with a selection of other recent studio works, is available for purchase.
