Capturing the Flight of the Eagle
There is a distinct tension in attempting to freeze a creature built entirely for movement. In this recent painting, the focus shifts away from a pristine, photographic representation of a bald eagle, turning instead toward the sheer friction of flight.

The work relies on a heavily textured, impasto application of paint. Rather than rendering individual feathers with uniform precision, the form is built through rapid, directional brushstrokes. You can see the physical weight of the white and grey pigment where the wings meet the torso, contrasted against the deep blacks and raw umbers of the upper plumage. The bright, stark blue of the background isn’t meant to depict a gentle sky; it functions as a solid, contrasting wall that pushes the forward momentum of the bird directly toward the viewer.
The challenge here was balancing the eagle’s iconic features—the sharp hook of the yellow beak and the powerful talons—with a sense of loose, almost turbulent energy. By allowing the edges of the wings to blend slightly into the snowy terrain below, the piece captures a fleeting moment of transition rather than a static pose. It’s an exploration of power, rendered not through meticulous detail, but through the deliberate, visible marks of the brush.
This original piece is rendered in thick, expressive layers on canvas board, showcasing the tactile qualities of the medium.
