Mid-Pounce Cat Painting

Studies in Animation: The Mid-Pounce Cat

Capturing the domestic cat often leads to predictable depictions of stillness—a creature curled by a fireplace or peering quietly from a windowsill. This study intentionally breaks from that convention, focusing instead on an abrupt, vocal moment of high energy.

An observational look at an expressive, textured cat painting by Gordon Powles. Exploring the movement, colour, and brushwork of a tortoiseshell cat mid-pounce.

The painting is built around an immediate, mid-pounce perspective that places the viewer directly in the line of motion. The composition relies heavily on short, fractured brushstrokes to mimic the erratic texture of tortoiseshell fur. Earthy ochres, burnt oranges, and deep browns are layered over one another without smooth blending, allowing the raw application of acrylic paint to suggest form and muscle under tension.

The focal point rests entirely within the facial expression. The wide, luminous green eyes are ringed with dark pigment to heighten their intensity, while the open jaw reveals a flash of pink and white, capturing a mid-meow or hiss. Sharp, fine white lines are dragged quickly across the wet paint to form the whiskers, providing a crisp geometric contrast to the looser, more chaotic marks defining the body. Behind the subject, a vibrant blue backdrop is swept across the canvas board in broad, visible strokes, framing the warmth of the cat’s coat and emphasising its forward momentum.

This original work offers an energetic, characterful interpretation of animal movement, painted with an emphasis on visible texture and bold colour relationships.
