UFO Hovering Above Rural House
Capturing an Uninvited Light
With this piece, I wanted to explore the quiet friction between the ordinary rural landscape and something completely out of the ordinary. The painting, ufo-hovering-above-rural-house-gordon-powles.jpg, began with a focus on structure and contrast—how the familiar angles of a country home respond when cast under an unexpected, vibrant light.
I chose acrylics for this work to allow for a swift, deliberate application of paint. The dark, heavily textured clouds at the top were rendered with a dry-brush technique, creating an oppressive atmosphere that presses down on the house. In contrast, the craft itself relies on sharp, circular rings of pink and yellow, cutting through the muted tones of the landscape below.

The technical challenge was balancing the weight of the dark foreground figures against the intense yellows illuminating them from above. By keeping the brushwork loose and energetic around the figures and the house, the scene maintains a sense of movement, as if capturing a fleeting, unsettling moment just before everything changes. It is less about explaining what is happening and more about observing the sudden shift in atmosphere.
