Cosmic Rhythm Musical UFO Flying Saucer

Painting Sound

The idea for Cosmic Rhythm came from a simple question: what does the sound of a mechanical object moving through space actually look like? When painting a subject like a flying saucer, it is easy to default to the typical tropes of science fiction illustration. For this piece, however, I wanted to move away from rigid metallic rendering and focus entirely on movement and vibration.

The central silhouette of the craft is heavy, blocked out in a deep black to anchor the composition. It acts as a static point against a very fluid, chaotic background. The challenge was balancing that weight with the lighter, musical elements floating around it. I used quick, directional brushstrokes of acrylic to build up layers of cool turquoises, deep blues, and pale purples, mimicking the way sound waves might travel or bleed into one another.

The musical notes are deliberately loose, almost bleeding into the background rather than sitting sharply on top of it. I chose warm oranges and muted reds for these elements to create a direct contrast with the cool, atmospheric tones of the sky. It is less about a literal scene and more about capturing a sense of syncopated rhythm. The final layers involved dry brushing lighter mint tones across the craft itself, suggesting a glow that is generated by the sound rather than an external light source.
