Painting Lowestoft Museum

Lowestoft Museum sits inside Broad House, a Grade II listed building tucked within Nicholas Everitt Park. It has a varied architectural profile—Gothic-arched doorways, warm brickwork, and distinct rooflines that settle naturally into the parkland surroundings.

Working on this piece, the initial focus was capturing that sense of structure without allowing the linework to feel heavy-handed. I began with an ink line wash to set down the architectural bones—the pointed arches, stone trim, and chimney lines. The line-and-wash method forces a certain discipline: ink provides the structural clarity, while the watercolor washes bring warmth, tone, and light to the building’s façade.

The large evergreen in the foreground presents a deliberate balance in the composition. Rather than obscuring the building, its dark, fan-like branches ground the scene and frame the quiet movement around the entrance. Soft washes of warm ochre, muted reds, and stone grey were applied to mirror how morning light settles on weathered brick and render. A subtle pop of blue on the side doorway anchors the lower right corner, drawing the eye through the quiet courtyard setting.

It is a modest study of local heritage, rooted in line, tone, and the everyday calm of Nicholas Everitt Park.
