Sail Boat Original Watercolour Painting
Reflections on Oulton Broad
With this piece, the intention was to capture a single, unhurried moment on Oulton Broad—a traditional Waveney Class dinghy moving across open water, framed by the familiar red brick architecture along the shoreline.

Working on a 12×9 format requires a measured approach to detail. The ink line work grounds the composition, defining the crisp structure of the sail, the rigging, and the timber trim of the boat, while allowing the wash to convey movement. The challenge with a subject like this lies in the contrast: balancing the clean white mass of the main sail against the deep cobalt reflections that ripple across the water.
Rather than overworking the trees lining the bank, I used loose, earthy tones—ochre, burnt sienna, and olive greens—letting the pigments bleed together naturally on the paper. The brick red of the building anchors the left frame, offering a warm counterweight to the cool blues of the water and sky.

It is an observation of local heritage and the steady rhythm of life on the Suffolk waterways, recorded simply as it unfolded.
