There is a particular quality to the light in Gorleston that demands a steady hand.
I wanted to capture the contrast between the sharp, salt-crusted edges of the building and the softer, transient presence of those sitting outside.
Working with watercolour requires a degree of surrender; you have to let the pigment settle into the grain of the paper. For this piece, I focused on the saturation of the roof tiles—a warm, grounded orange that sits against the muted, cooler tones of the coastal morning.
The ink lines are purposefully quick, intended to suggest the motion of passers-by rather than define them with rigidity. It is a quiet observation of a place that feels familiar to so many, pinned down in a moment of stillness.
