Quiet Waters at Oulton Broad

Working along the water’s edge requires a balance between swift mark-making and deliberate patience. With this piece, the focus wasn’t on over-rendering every detail of the moored boats, but rather on recording the structural rhythm of the quay—the contrast between rigid architectural lines and the fluid surface below.

Quiet Waters at Oulton Broad watercolour

The foundation relies on an ink line drawing to establish the weight of the buildings, the angle of the terracotta roofs, and the rigging against the sky. Layered over this is a restrained wash of watercolour. Rather than filling every space, areas of paper are left open to let light breathe through the composition.

The soft, washed-out blue of the water anchors the foreground, carrying slight shadows from the hulls, while warm ochres and burnt sienna pull the eye toward the cluster of buildings behind the moorings. It is an exercise in capturing the everyday stillness of the broads without overworking the paper.
