Capturing the Gaze When painting wildlife, there is always a balance to be struck between…
Vibrant Red Fox Wildlife
There is a quiet intensity in the gaze of a fox when you happen to cross paths with one in the British countryside. That brief, sharp moment of connection is what I wanted to capture in this piece.
In working on this vibrant red fox wildlife painting, the challenge was not just to depict the animal but to let the brushwork carry its energy. Rather than overcomplicating the form with fine detail, I leaned into a more expressive, textured approach. The coat is built from bold, urgent strokes of deep terracotta, orange, and raw umber, contrasted directly against cooler, blocky applications of white and sudden hints of blue in the shadows.
The background is intentionally kept broad and fluid. Against a cool teal-blue backdrop, the fox’s warmth naturally pushes forward. The focus remains entirely on those clear, amber eyes and the immediate, physical weight of the paint itself. It is less about creating a literal likeness and more about capturing a fleeting, living presence.
