Capturing Motion in Light and Ink
With this piece, titled Majestic Bald Eagle Abstract Painting, the focus was less on a literal rendering of the bird and more on the pure energy of its flight. I wanted to balance the sharp, deliberate weight of the eagle’s form against a backdrop of fluid, spontaneous colour.
The process began with working the background—using broad, rapid strokes of acrylic to build an atmosphere of intense heat and cool shadow. The deep reds and oranges at the top suggest a harsh, brilliant light, which is countered by the cooler blues and greys gathering beneath the wings. Finding the right balance between these contrasting tones required a fast, almost instinctive approach to application, allowing the wet paint to mix slightly on the surface to keep the movement alive.
For the eagle itself, I relied on loose black ink lines and heavy, descriptive marks to define the wings’ structure and the sharp profile of the head. The stark white of the crown stands out against the surrounding warmth, acting as a quiet focal point amidst the chaotic motion. It was a technical challenge to keep the linework looking immediate and unforced, ensuring the bird felt integrated into the abstract landscape rather than simply placed on top of it.
The final painting captures a single, fleeting moment of suspension, holding the tension between raw colour and form.
