There is an energy in wild poppies that is difficult to capture with fine, deliberate brushwork. They don’t sit still, and their colour feels almost too intense for a quiet landscape.

When working on a vibrant wild poppy meadow painting, the focus was less on documenting the flowers’ anatomy and more on the weight of the paint and the movement of the sky. By using thick, deliberate strokes and working directly with a palette knife and broad brushes, the intent was to ground those vivid reds and oranges against a shifting, cool backdrop.

The blue of the sky isn’t a passive element; it cuts into the fields, balanced by the heavy greens and sudden bursts of ochre and yellow. It is the contrast between the warmth of the petals and the freshness of the air that drives the piece. The texture on the surface reflects that immediate, tactile experience of standing in a field where the wind keeps everything in motion.
