Basket of Bright Summer Fruits

Capturing Midsummer Light

Still life painting has always been less about the objects themselves and more about how light interacts with form. With this piece, Basket of Bright Summer Fruits, the initial draw wasn’t just the collection of produce, but the sheer intensity of midsummer colour against a cooler backdrop.

When working on Basket of Bright Summer Fruits, I wanted to move away from a delicate, overly rendered approach. Instead, I opted for a heavy application of acrylic paint to give the fruit a physical weight. The challenge lay in balancing the dense textures of the palette knife work with the natural softness of the subject matter.

The composition is built on contrasts. The warmth of the deep reds, rich plums, and bright yellows sits against the pale blues and whites of the background. By laying down thick, deliberate strokes, the paint catches the ambient light in the room, shifting slightly depending on the angle from which it is viewed. The woven basket serves as an anchor, its earthy tones holding the fruit’s vibrant energy together on the tabletop.

Ultimately, the goal was to capture a fleeting moment of seasonal abundance. It is an exploration of texture and pure colour, allowing the paint to remain unapologetically paint.
