Sunlit Mediterranean Harbour and Boats

Capturing the Warmth of the Coast

When working on Sunlit Mediterranean Harbour and Boats, my focus was less on the literal geometry of the port and more on the weight of the afternoon heat. The Mediterranean light has a way of flattening distant forms while intensifying the colours closest to the eye. I wanted to see if I could balance those heavy, sun-baked ochres and terracotta tones against the fluid, shifting blues of the water.

The technical challenge lay in the brushwork for the foreground harbour. Water in this light isn’t a single tone; it is a moving surface of reflections. By using broken, visible strokes of pale turquoise, deep cobalt, and hints of yellow, I tried to suggest the gentle movement of the tied boats without losing the structure of the composition. The paint is applied thickly in places, letting the texture catch the light, much like the rendered walls of coastal buildings.

Ultimately, the piece is about quiet observation. It is an attempt to record that specific stillness when the sun is at its height, the boats are moored, and the landscape seems to hold its breath.
