Sailboats at Sea

Catching the Shift of the Tide

There is a particular energy when boats gather on open water, a restless movement that traditional, flat painting sometimes struggles to capture. With this piece, my interest wasn’t in creating a precise maritime blueprint, but rather in capturing the immediate, physical sensation of being amidst the swell. The water isn’t a static surface; it is a moving mass of deep blues, sudden turquoises, and fragments of light reflecting off the chop.

To convey that constant motion, I leaned heavily into Fauvist colour choices and expressive, layered brushwork. The warm terracotta and rich pink of the sails are intentionally mismatched against the cool brilliance of the sea and sky, forcing the eye to move quickly across the canvas. I wanted the viewer to feel the speed of the wind caught in the canvas and the unpredictable push of the waves beneath the hulls.

Working with thick, deliberate strokes allows the paint itself to mimic the texture of the elements. The marks are left visible, showing the direction of the hand and the speed of the decision-making on the canvas. It is less about documenting a specific harbour and more about the memory of a coastal afternoon—the brightness, the sharp wind, and the heavy tilt of a boat leaning into a turn.
