Structure and Chaos within the Grid There is a deliberate tension in starting a piece…
Geometric De Stijl Inspired Modern Abstract Composition
Finding Order in the Linear
There is a distinct tension that comes with limiting your vocabulary to the grid. In working on this piece, the challenge was not just about placing lines but deciding where the paint should push back against that structure. While the initial prompt came from the strict geometry of De Stijl, I wanted to see how those rigid rules might fracture when exposed to the texture of a loaded brush.

The heavy black lines provide the architecture, anchoring the composition to the white ground. However, if you look closely at the primary blocks—the deep blue and the central red arc—the colour isn’t flat. It carries the weight of the application, showing horizontal scrapes and translucent layers where the underpainting breathes through. The yellow section acts as a weight, grounding the right side, while the curved, softer segments at the top and bottom left break the monotony of the right angle.
Abstract work like this often becomes a balancing act between intent and restraint. It is about knowing when a line has done its job to frame a space, and when a patch of bare, off-white background needs to be left entirely alone to let the surrounding colours settle.
