Abstract Cityscape Teal and Pink Expressionist Composition

Finding the Rhythm of the Street

Cities have a habit of imposing their own geometry on us. The vertical rise of glass and concrete, the harsh horizontals of pavements and crossings—it all creates a very structured environment. In this piece, I wanted to break that rigidity down, to capture the movement and atmosphere of an urban landscape rather than its exact architecture.

The composition began with the vertical marks. Using varying tones of teal, I laid down fluid, upright strokes to suggest the presence of buildings, doorways, and streets stretching upwards. But cities are rarely monolithic; they are broken up by light, reflection, and human activity. To balance the cooler, heavy teal tones, I introduced sharp, energetic cuts of bright pink and neon coral. These highlights act almost like neon signage or the sudden break of brake lights reflecting off damp asphalt, cutting through the cooler structure to give the piece its pulse.

The real challenge lay in the weight of the paint itself. Near the lower third, the brushwork thins out into more translucent washes, contrasted against thicker, heavier black and dark green linework. These darker, gestural marks ground the composition, hinting at the chaotic movement of traffic or a crowd at street level without explicitly defining them. It is an exercise in restraint—knowing when a quick, intuitive scrape of the brush says more than a finely rendered detail.

By stripping away the literal shapes of windows and walls, the focus shifts entirely to the energy of the space. It is less about a specific map coordinate and more about the feeling of standing on a busy corner, watching the colour and light move past.
