Vintage Sweet Shop Candy Jars Expressionist

Painting Memory: The Texture and Colour of Vintage Candy Jars

There is a specific kind of quiet magic in the heavy glass jars that lined the shelves of old sweet shops. They were structures of pure colour and light, holding memories as much as confectionery. In this piece, I wanted to move past a literal translation of those familiar shapes and instead capture the weight of that nostalgia through an expressionist lens.

Instead of clean lines, I focused on the form and density of the jars using bold, deliberate brushwork. The challenge lay in balancing the structure of the glass with the loose, vibrant energy of the sweets inside. By layering the paint thickly, the colours don’t just represent the candy; they catch the light in a way that replicates the physical presence of a crowded counter. It is less about the exact details of a vintage shop and more about the texture of the memory itself—the depth of the shadows between the jars and the bright, shifting tones that pulled our eyes as children.
