Sun-Drenched Lemon Pitcher Colourful Still Life

The light in the studio changes mid-afternoon, flattening out before hitting the corner of the table with a sudden, sharp clarity. That is usually the moment I look for—the point where a familiar, everyday object stops being purely functional and becomes entirely about colour and weight.

With this piece, the focus was a simple ceramic lemon pitcher. Instead of chasing a literal reproduction, the goal was to capture the warmth that seems to bounce off the surface when the sun hits it directly. It is an exercise in contrast: the cool, deep shadows underneath against the intense, saturated yellows and deep oranges of the glaze.

I chose to work heavily with the palette knife here, building up the paint in thick, deliberate layers. There is a specific satisfaction in letting the texture do the heavy lifting. By leaving the marks visible and unblended, the surface catches the physical light in the room, mirroring the energy of the subject itself. It isn’t about meticulous detail; it is about the raw response to a moment of brilliant colour.

The background is kept deliberately loose, a mix of muted tones that allow the pitcher to sit forward confidently. It is a quiet subject, but one filled with the kind of optimism that only a bright, sun-drenched palette can bring to a space.
