Abstract Poppy Field Landscape

Finding the Balance in Red and Grey

There is a brief window in summer when the landscape does something unexpected. The bright, intense red of a poppy field cuts sharply across the muted, shifting tones of an English sky. In working on Abstract Poppy Field Landscape, the intention wasn’t to carefully map out every single petal, but rather to capture the weight of that colour memory against the cooler air.

The challenge with a dominant colour like red is preventing it from overwhelming the entire piece. It requires a quiet counterpoint. Here, the foreground relies on quick, vertical strokes—scumbled greys, pale pinks, and muted greens—to create a sense of looking through the growth rather than just at it. I wanted the canvas texture to work with the paint, allowing some of the underlying layers to show through and mimic the erratic movement of wild stems.

Further back, the red becomes a solid block, a heavy horizontal band that anchors the composition. It is balanced by the sky above, where the marks are broader and more fluid. The pale blues and overcast greys carry a few sweeps of soft purple, catching the light the way clouds do just before the weather changes. It is less about a specific place and more about the contrast between the stillness of the horizon and the energy of the field.
