Hot Air Balloons
Working with Form and Weightlessness
There is a particular challenge in capturing inherently weightless objects with a medium as heavy and physical as oil paint. When I began working on “colourful-hot-air-balloons-gordon-powles.jpg”, my focus wasn’t simply on the bright colours but on conveying the slow, drifting motion of the balloons against the expanse of the sky.
The background required a relatively flat, quiet application of light blue to give the eye a place to rest. This allowed the foreground elements to carry more substance. By applying the paint with deliberate, visible strokes, I wanted to give the balloons a sense of presence. The red, yellow, and blue segments are not blended smoothly; instead, they are blocky and textured, relying on the viewer’s eye to piece the shapes together from a distance.
The smaller balloons lower in the frame required a different approach—less definition, more suggestion. A few quick marks of the brush were enough to register their shape against the horizon, establishing a sense of depth without overcomplicating the composition.
In pieces like this, the goal is always to find a balance between the reality of the subject and the reality of the paint itself. The ridges left by the bristles are left intentionally exposed, reminding us that while we are looking at a sky filled with movement, we are also looking at paint on a textured surface.

Hot air balloons float against a clear blue sky. The balloons exhibit bold patterns in red, yellow, and blue hues. Lift your spirits and imagination with “Colourful Hot Air Balloon Painting,” an expressive artwork that captures the joy and wonder of a vibrant balloon festival. This dynamic piece features a cluster of colourful hot air balloons soaring through a clear, light blue sky. With bold, expressive brushstrokes, the balloons are rendered in striking shades of primary red, sunny yellow, and deep blue. Smaller balloons drift in the distant background, adding depth to the scene, while hints of an earthy, colourful landscape anchor the bottom of the canvas.
