Hummingbird and Hibiscus Encounter

Capturing the Flutter: Hummingbird and Hibiscus Encounter

There is a distinct challenge in trying to pin down something that refuses to stay still. Hummingbirds exist in a state of constant, blurred motion, while the hibiscus flower offers a heavy, static contrast. In painting this encounter, my interest lay not in creating a precise, textbook illustration, but rather in capturing the energy of that brief, hovering moment.

The background was built up with broad, loose strokes of green and blue, keeping the atmosphere fluid and unanchored. I wanted the environment to feel alive, mimicking the natural movement of a garden in a breeze. For the hibiscus, I opted for bold, layered applications of red and pink acrylic, using heavy pigment to give the petals weight and presence on the surface.

In contrast, the hummingbird required a more fractured approach. Rather than smooth blending, I used quick, broken brushstrokes and sharp white outlines to suggest the frantic vibration of its wings and the light catching its iridescence. The black lines are deliberate and slightly raw, grounding the bird’s form before it darts out of frame. It is less about perfection and more about the impression of speed meeting stillness.
