Hummingbird Near Red Flowers

Capturing Weightlessness

Painting something that moves too quickly for the eye to naturally track presents a distinct challenge. In my acrylic painting, depicted in “Hummingbird Near Red Flowers”, my intention was not to freeze the bird in a hyper-realistic state but to convey the sheer energy and vibrancy of its flight against the stillness of the garden.

The focus here is primarily on line and texture. I used bold, expressive strokes to construct the hummingbird’s body, allowing the bright greens and pale blues to overlap and dissipate at the wingtips.

By keeping the background sparse and cool, the intense reds and pinks of the hibiscus flowers stand out, grounded by thicker impasto highlights that give the petals a tangible presence.

The technical challenge was to keep the paint loose enough to suggest rapid motion while retaining the sharp precision of the bird’s beak as it approaches the bloom. I aimed to explore that brief, suspended moment of connection—where natural colour and frenetic movement temporarily align.
