In the Studio: Exploring Form and Light in Urban Abstraction | Gordon Powles Art

Finding the Structure in the Haze

There is a brief window of time at the end of the day when a city ceases to be a collection of signs, windows, and glass, and becomes a series of heavy, intersecting shapes. It is this specific transition—where the noise of the streets fades into blocks of tone and light—that I wanted to explore in my painting, Weight and Light of the City: Golden Urban Architecture Abstract.

When approaching this piece, the challenge wasn’t to replicate a particular skyline, but rather to capture the weight of built forms against the soft, diffused quality of late afternoon light. The composition relies on deliberate, dark structural lines to map out the canvas. These lines act as anchors, holding the softer elements together and mimicking the rigid geometry of urban planning.

Against these sharp boundaries, the application of colour is far more fluid. I chose a palette of earthy terracottas, muted reds, and pale ochres because of how they absorb and reflect warmth. At the top of the canvas, the sky is reduced to a flat, heavy yellow haze—an attempt to capture that stillness when the dust and heat of the day begin to settle over the concrete.

As the eye moves lower, the brushwork becomes more tactile and fragmented. The darker, sweeping strokes at the base are less about specific details and more about the impression of shadow and movement at street level. For me, abstracting these familiar shapes is an exercise in restraint; it is about stripping away the superficial details of the city to find the quiet, enduring structure underneath.
