Rhythm in the Lines The challenge of translating music into a visual medium is that…
The weight of the note
In the quiet intensity of a jazz club, the air often seems to thicken with the sound itself. I wanted to capture that precise moment where the instrument entirely absorbs the musician.
My focus here was on the player’s physical presence. By using a palette knife, I could build up thick, deliberate layers of paint, allowing the texture to do the work rather than fine-tuned blending. You can see how the shadows in the suit hold their own weight, rendered in heavy, structured strokes, while the light hitting the saxophone picks up cooler, sharper tones to cut through the warmth of the background.
The aim was not to capture a perfect likeness, but to reflect the atmosphere of the music. It is a study in movement and stillness held together, where the colour—a wash of muted ochres and deliberate darks—acts as the stage for the rhythm. It is a piece that asks for a moment of quiet, much like the pause between notes.
