Harbour Light and Movement
There is a specific stillness to a harbour just as the day begins to turn, a moment when the reflections on the water become more vivid than the structures themselves. In the piece, I wanted to capture that shift.
The challenge here was to balance the boats’ density with the water’s fluidity. Using the palette knife, I worked to build up the paint, allowing the textures to suggest the weight of the hulls against the light. Rather than detailing every rope and mast, the aim was to let the bold application of colour communicate the atmosphere of the coast.
The deep blues of the water act as an anchor, letting the warmer, more expressive tones in the sky and the vessels draw the eye. It is an exploration of how light interacts with a harbour, turning a familiar scene into a study of pure movement and colour.
