The focus is less on the boat’s mechanics and more on the quality of the light hitting the water. There is a particular tension in coastal scenes between the movement of the tides and the stillness required to capture them.
Working with a palette knife here allowed for a deliberate application of colour. You can see it in the way the blues of the harbour shift against the warm, reflected tones below the hull.
It was an exercise in restraint—knowing when to leave the paint thick and textured and when to let the brushwork suggest the gentler ripples further out. The aim was to convey that specific moment of calm found in harbours along the Suffolk and Cornish coasts, where the air feels heavy with salt and the day begins to settle.
