Abstract Male Portrait

Finding the Form in the Line

When working on a portrait, there is always a tension between accuracy and feeling. With this piece, Abstract Male Portrait, the goal was not to replicate a specific likeness, but to capture the weight of a gaze using raw, immediate marks.

The process began with a focus on contrasting tones and the interplay of media. The soft, fluid washes of violet and amber provide a quiet background, allowing the heavy, erratic linework to take precedence. Using fine, energetic scribbles alongside broader charcoal marks creates a physical texture on the surface. It is a deliberate choice to let the construction lines remain visible—the searching marks around the brow and jawline are just as important as the final features. They show the history of the drawing, the trial and error of finding the form.

The character relies entirely on the relationship between the complementary colours. The warm ochre cutting across the forehead blocks out the fall of light, while the deep violet scribbles build the shadows under the brow and nose. By stripping away the smooth transitions of traditional portraiture, the face becomes a landscape of quick decisions and hard edges. The expression is left open to interpretation, caught somewhere between quiet contemplation and intensity.
