Beach Huts: Coastal Impressionism

Observing the Coast

There is a particular rhythm to a row of beach huts. Standing on the shore, they cut a familiar silhouette against the horizon—each one identical in purpose, yet entirely distinct in character. In working on the piece captured in Beach Huts: Coastal Impressionism, my focus was less on rendering a literal architectural record and more on capturing how the stark coastal light interacts with these structures.

The challenge lay in balancing the high-contrast geometry of the huts against the organic fluidity of the sand and sky. I chose to use bold, deliberate brushstrokes to define the forms, allowing the texture of the acrylic to remain visible on the surface. The bright yellow of the foremost hut demands immediate attention, grounded by heavy, dark outlines that mimic the deep shadows cast by the midday sun.

As the eye moves down the line, the huts recede into softer, more impressionistic marks, mirroring the natural compression of perspective along the coastline.

The foreground sand is built up with layered, warm earthy tones, balanced by the cooler turquoise of the sky. By leaving the brushwork loose and visible, the composition retains a sense of the movement and shifting atmosphere inherent to the coast. It is an exploration of structure, colour, and the quiet consistency of the seaside.
