Rooster Portrait
Capturing the Character of the Yard
A colourful, expressive depiction of a rooster with vivid brushstrokes. The combination of bright and bold hues captures attention. Bring the rustic charm and bold spirit of the farmyard to your walls with this captivating painting of a rooster. The artwork portrays a detailed, forward-facing view of a rooster with an intense, proud gaze. Executed in a dynamic, impressionistic style, the piece uses bold, textured brushstrokes and rich colours to bring the subject’s feathers to life.
There is an inherent alertness to a rooster that demands a specific kind of energy from the brush. When working on the piece shown in my Rooster Portrait, my intention was not to create a precise anatomical study, but rather to translate that sharp, almost confrontational presence into physical paint.
The challenge lay in balancing the weight of the bird’s posture with the fluid, swift nature of its feathers. I chose to work with heavy, direct strokes, allowing the layers to overlap rather than blend entirely. By using thick paint applications, the surface retains the physical speed of the mark-making, mirroring the sudden, jerky movements typical of the subject.
The Interaction of Colour
The palette here relies on a deliberate contrast between warm and cool tones. The deep ochres, burnt oranges, and intense reds of the head and comb carry a dense, earthy weight. To counter this, the background and tail feathers use variations of cerulean, violet, and pale blue.
Instead of a flat backdrop, the blue surrounding the rooster is rendered with broad, rhythmic strokes that echo the bird’s form. This helps to anchor the subject within the space, ensuring the background feels active rather than static. The yellow peak on the beak serves as a focal point, drawing the eye directly into the bird’s sharp expression.
Ultimately, the piece is an exploration of how few marks are required to convey a specific attitude. It is about letting the paint remain paint—visible, textured, and immediate—while still capturing the unmistakable essence of life.
