Ember Sun Abstract Landscape

Catching the Heat

There is a specific moment at the end of the day when the horizon seems to lose its sharp edge, dissolving entirely into temperature and light. With Ember Sun Abstract Landscape, the intention wasn’t to map a precise geographic location, but to capture the heavy, radiant warmth that lingers long after the sun dips low.

The composition built itself through layers of deliberate, heavy brushwork. I wanted to explore the transition from the cooler, deeper ochres and madders at the base up into the more pressing, energetic oranges and yellows that dominate the upper third. Working abstractly allows the paint itself to dictate the structure—fine, scratched lines cut through the broader marks, suggesting the skeletal remains of a landscape or the harsh angles of coastal architecture catching the final rays.

The challenge lay in balancing the weight of the darker tones with the stark clarity of the yellow sky. It required a quick, intuitive application to keep the colours from muddying, ensuring that the light feels as though it is actively burning through the texture. It is less about a view you can see and more about a climate you can feel.
