Structure and Chaos within the Grid There is a deliberate tension in starting a piece…
Glowing Sky Lanterns Night
There is a specific challenge in painting a light source that is moving away from you. With this piece, Glowing Sky Lanterns, the focus wasn’t just on the lanterns themselves, but on how that warm, orange glow cuts through a cold night sky.

I wanted to capture the contrast between the heavy, structured dark blues of the lower atmosphere and the lighter, almost fluid blues higher up where the wind takes over. The brushwork here is deliberately visible; the background has a textured, swept feel to mimic a restless night air. For the lanterns, I layered bright yellows beneath transparent oranges to give them a sense of internal heat, using quick, upward strokes to suggest momentum. Down at the bottom, you can see the light breaking and scattering across the dark ground or water below, anchoring the scene just before everything rises out of frame.
It is a quiet subject, really—the transition from a grounded spark to a distant speck of light, and finding the balance where the cold sky begins to swallow the warmth.
