Swirling Octopus

There is a distinct energy in watching the fluid, deliberate movement of marine life, something I wanted to capture on the canvas with this piece. The focus here isn’t on a realistic anatomical study, but rather on the heavy, rhythmic motion of the octopus moving through deep water.

Swirling Octopus

I chose a palette of contrasting temperatures—working thick, opaque oranges and ochres against a backdrop of deep indigos and cool turquoises. The challenge was keeping the brushwork loose enough to convey that sense of constant suspension and weightlessness. You can see the heavy texture in the whites and pale blues at the base, where the paint is applied quickly, leaving the marks of the bristles visible to hint at moving water and shifting seabeds.

The dark outlines around the tentacles help ground the form against the cooler background, creating a structure for the eye to follow as the limbs curl and twist. It’s an exercise in balancing heavy paint application with the inherently fluid nature of the subject matter.
