Watercolour Study of Oulton Broad Boat Yard

There is a distinct stillness to a boatyard when the water settles, an interplay of rigid structures and fluid reflections that always catches my eye. In this watercolour study of Oulton Broad, my interest was not just in documenting the vessels themselves, but in capturing the weight of the hulls against the loose, unpredictable nature of the washes.

I started with a sparse ink line to anchor the composition, tracing the masts, rigging, and the worn boat shape moored in the foreground. The technical challenge with watercolour is knowing when to let the pigment bleed and when to hold a sharp edge.

For the deep shadows beneath the sterns, I used heavy, cool indigo tones, allowing them to pool slightly to convey the murky depth of the water. This dark undertone contrast allows the brief notes of rust-orange and pale yellow to punctuate the scene without overwhelming the quiet atmosphere.

Working on this piece was about balancing that structure with spontaneity—letting the wet-in-wet turquoise wash suggest the movement of the Broad while the fine ink details keep the eye grounded in the working reality of the yard.
