Sailboats in Blue Harbour: Vibrant Coastal Regatta Scene
In the Sailboats in Blue Harbour: Vibrant Coastal Regatta Scene, the primary challenge was to capture the stillness of the water against the kinetic energy of a regatta. Rather than detailing every rope and rigging, I chose to focus on how the light strikes the sails and reflects into the harbour.
Using a palette knife, I applied the paint to build up texture, particularly where the sunlight hits the white canvas of the sails. The water is rendered in broad, flat strokes of cerulean and cobalt, broken up by the sharp, gestural orange reflections of the hulls.
It is an exercise in restraint; allowing the colours to sit side-by-side without over-blending them preserves the sense of a fleeting, breezy afternoon. The composition seeks to place the viewer at the water’s edge, watching the fleet settle into the bay as the tide turns.
