Vibrant Coastal Lighthouse Scene
On the edge of the coast
There is a specific stillness that descends when painting a lighthouse. In the piece, I wanted to capture more than just the structure itself; I was interested in the physical encounter between the red, craggy rocks and the breaking surf.
Working with a palette knife allows for a certain honesty in the mark-making. You can see it in the way the paint sits on the foreground rocks—a deliberate thickness that catches the light differently as you move past the work. I applied the blues of the sky with broad, sweeping movements, trying to balance the rigidity of the lighthouse tower against the chaotic, fluid motion of the water below.
The contrast between the warm, burnt reds of the shoreline and the cooler tones of the sea is what drew me to this scene. It is a quiet study of endurance, of something man-made standing firm against the constant, restless energy of the tide. It is not an attempt to replicate reality, but rather to distil the feeling of standing on that shoreline, watching the light shift across the water.
